　上塗りされすぎてぬるぬるした奇妙な質感の黒髪が光り、精悍ながらも優しいその顔が今は片方の眉を上げた訝しげな表情で固まってる。 　その視線の先には、深々頭を下げる金髪の女性がいた。 「まあ、顔をあげなよ」 　女が顔を上げ、長く、さらさらの金髪を頭の後ろからやや高めの位置で結われた髪が揺れる。 　切れ長の目と、紺色の瞳。御蓮人ではありえないような肌の白さは彼女が異邦のリズ人であることを示している。 　見事な肢体を覆い、要所を強化プラスチックの装甲で守られたアームヘッドパイロット専用の紺色のパイロットスーツと金色の階級章。 　――御蓮軍・アームヘッド小隊第十三部隊隊長・アイネアス=メイヤー。 「で？　何の用？」 「この度は、ラグナロク撃退に尽力していただき……」 「あぁ、うん。……アイネアス、また痩せた？」 　言左衛門が訝しげな顔のまま首をかしげた。その細かく推し量るような視線にアイネアスは一歩下がって胸の前で両腕を組んだ。 「恥ずかしいなら普通の軍服でいいじゃんか」 　真っ赤になったアイネアスの顔を指差して言左衛門は言う。 「……こちらの方が企業ウケするという広報の判断だ。それに……、恥ずかしいのはお前に見せるときだけだ」 　ぶっきらぼうにアイネアスが言う。言左衛門はあまり興味なさそうに頷き、ようやく表情を変え、眼を皿のように細めた。 「おい」 　その顔を見てアイネアスは低い声で言左衛門を威嚇する。 「二キロは落ちただろう。整備士にちゃんと伝えて、調整してもらわないと」 　しれっとしながら言左衛門は椅子を後ろに引いて両手を後頭部に当てた。 「……用心深いな」 「体重二キロの誤差がアームヘッドに与える影響、バイオニクルフレーム間接に、コックピットシート。バーニア出力と体重移動時の――」 「あぁ、もういいもういい。わたしが悪かった。ちゃんと調整してもらうよ」 　アイネアスはため息をつきながら両掌をぐっと前に出して呆れたようにその続きを拒否する。 「アイネアス、日曜はヒマ？」 　言左衛門はメモ帳らしきものに鉛筆で走り書きをした。 「……え？」 　真剣そうな言左衛門の表情に、アイネアスは一瞬期待しかけ―― 「日曜こっちで調整する。その際にパイロットスーツの調整もしよう」 「……は？」 　アイネアスの端正な顔が凍りついた。 「バスト、ヒップがプラス……。ウエストがマイナス。こういう部分の誤差もアームヘッド高速移動時のパイロットの身体的負荷を軽減させる」 　至極マジメな表情の言左衛門に、アイネアスは両手を握りしめていつ殴るかを延々考えていた。 目の前に広がる広大な景色。空は青く、大地は土の赤茶と僅かな草の緑に染まっていた。 そしてその真中に、不似合いな巨大な人影が二体、静かに佇んでいた。 一方の色は黒。赤いカメラアイに、甲虫のようなホーン。逆関節の脚部に、光学狙撃銃を携えた機体。 もう一方は白に、ところどころ赤と青の入った機体。肩には鋭利なブレードが装備された、武器をもたない機体。 ――No.17ブライアン・オールドリッジ、No.11山田 テルミ、及びNo.12のウィノナ・サニーレタス。 「……それが、貴女の答えなの？」 静かな口調で、ウィノナさんから通信が入った。 今更な言葉だけど、私は自分の思いを静かに返した。 「私は裏切ってなんかないよ。ただ居場所を失くしたとき、手を差し伸べてくれたのがあの人達だったから。 私はもう、あの人達の側にいるもん。今更、"裏切れ"ないよ」 言い終えて、少しの間をあけてから、今度はブライアンの声が聞こえた。 「そうか。俺達のお誘いが、ちと遅かったか」 そう言いながら、ブライアンは自分の機体、『ジュリア』の狙撃銃を構えた。 それに呼応するように、白い機体……『マイティラバーズ』も、戦闘態勢を取る。 二対一。相手はそれぞれ遠距離支援型と、近距離強襲型。 少し苦しいかも、と思った時だった。 「――な…っ！」 轟音と共に、アームヘッド数体分はあろうかという長い刀がマイティラバーズを襲った。 その刃は、瞬間的に対応したマイティラバーズの両手によって掴まれ、コクピットには届いていなかった。 刃の根本、柄を握るのは、至ってシンプルな外装の機体『朱点童子』。 ウィノナ達が事態を把握するまでもなく、朱点童子は掴まれた刀身を完全に手放し、その勢いのままマイティラバーズに突進、頭を掴んで引きずり倒した。 咄嗟にジュリアのほうを確認すると、そっちには全身毛むくじゃらの、いろんな動物のパーツを取ってつけたような異形の機体が襲いかかっていた。 元々鈍重なジュリアは、その異形…『鵺』の極めて動物的な、恐ろしく俊敏な動きについてこれず、 あっという間に狙撃銃の砲身を噛み砕かれ、更に胸部を後ろ足で蹴られ、轟音とともに倒れこんだ。 地面に横たわる二機ともピクリともしなかったけど、どっちもあの装甲なら三人ともきっと生きているだろう。 思ったより落ち着いた心境のまま、私は通信を入れた。 「……ありがとう。エンシューさん、デッドマンさん」 「お礼なら後、今は一刻もはやくここから去りますよ。すぐに追っ手が来ます」 「……」 デッドマンさんだけ喋らず、獣じみた荒い息遣いだけが聞こえてきた。 彼が戦闘中にこうなのは、事前にエンシューさんから聞いていたから、特に驚きもしない。 まもなく、鵺はその俊敏さで一足先に向こうへと駈けだしてしまった。 それに続いて、朱点童子もバーニアを起動。地面を滑り始めた。 ……ふと、後ろを振り向く。倒れたまま動かない、白と黒の機体。 自分の選んだ道が、一体何を意味しているのかを無言で叩きつけてくる光景を、しばらく見つめていた。 「行きますよ」 『平行世界では幸せですよって言われて俺が俺達が満足すると思うのか？うまく行ってると俺達を救ってると思っているのか？』 男は言葉を強めて言った。女は包帯を弄るのをやめ、男を見た。 『それはわからない、でもそんなことがわかってしまうのは損だね。昔のあなたはかわいそうだった』 『今だってそうは変わらない、このセカイはまるでままごとだ、都合の悪いことは起こらない』 そうなってるから。 『そうでもない、昔のヘブンよりマシにするために頑張ってるだけだ』 『ケントを救うためか？』 男が聞く。 ・・・ケント、この世界では悲劇を少なくしてきたつもりだそれがただの自分の満足でないとの自信はない。そもそも昔の世界は変わらないのだから、このことに意味があるのかそれはさっぱりわからない。でもこれを始めたのは自分なのだ、それは覚えている。 最後の特異点制御がある時点で発動し私は運命樹を見た。シンギュラリティの形を見て、それからほぼすべてを失った。だからどういう意図でこの能力が起きたのかわかっていない。ネクストエイジの終わり、特異点と代替特異点のせめぎあい、それをほとんどゼロに抹消した。そして未来に解決の手を委ねたのだ。 レイライン保護並行世界、レイラインの行使によって行われなかった世界、そこに答えがあるらしい。 　今日はサイ・レントという富豪をしのぶ会であり、世界的富豪であり自分の多額のお金を様々な事に投資して使い切りたかったが、結局、逆に大儲けしてしまった残念な富豪で、そのお金は今、世界の三大組織とも言われるグランジ、レインディアーズ、ヒリングデーモンへと流れている。 　その経緯はサイ・レントの育てていた義理の娘――正確には孫娘と言った方が良い歳の離れ方だが――であるソフィア・アターラロがそれぞれの組織に居るデイブ・グロリア、空条 彼方、エンシューと親交があったことからこれがされたとも言われる。 　彼女の行為は批判も多いが賛同も多い。それだけ彼らの組織にお世話になっている人々が多いのだろう。 　会場の隅のテーブルの近く、壁に寄り掛かってワイングラスを傾ける青年が居た。 　純白のタキシードを着て赤ワインを飲む姿はいかにも様になっているが、左胸にある注射器を持った悪魔の刺繍が近づく女性をゼロにさせていた。 　ヒリング・デーモンの小沢 勇太郎である。 　ヒリングデーモン、と言えばラスト・サンライズかロバート・ラスターだがもともと主要戦闘員が少ないため世間の常識としてヒリングデーモン主要メンバーである彼の顔と名前は憶えられていた。 　傍らには先ほどまで珍しくパイロットスーツでなくドレスを着たエンシューが居たのだがソフィア・アターラロに連れて行かれてしまった。 「……せっかく、デッドマンに頼まれごとをされたのに」 　そう独り言を言って彼は肩をすくめた。 　同僚のデッドマンはドレス姿のエンシューの写真を頼んだのである。 「まったく、彼らしいと言えば彼らしいが、自分で撮ればいいのに」 　ふと、勇太郎はざわざわと群衆が二つに分かれるのがわかった。もともと人が多いわけではないが、明らかに何かを避けているような人の流れに彼は眉をひそめた。 「あっ……」 　群衆を二つに分けていたのは一人の男だった。 　男の方がこちらに気づき、勇太郎は軽く右手を挙げて応える。 「こんばんは。健太郎さん。スーツお似合いですよ」 　紺色の高そうなスーツを着た青年が渋い顔をする。 「落ち着かないな……」 　三大組織の一角、レインディアーズに所属する蓮田 健太郎はため息をついた。 「俺はお前みたいにそう言う場になれてないんだ」 「僕だって大分ご無沙汰してました。でも、久しぶりに美味しいお酒が飲めてラッキーですよ」 「そりゃよかった。お前以外は居ないのか？」 　健太郎はあたりをきょろきょろ見渡した。 「さっきまでエンシューが居ました。珍しくドレスなんて着て」 「それは見たかったな」 　ウエイターの持っているお盆からドリンクを受け取った健太郎が笑う。 「そのスーツはアイリーンさんの見立てですか」 「あぁ。昨日ムリヤリ買い物に連れかれて……。一回しか着ないようなものをわざわざ買わされたよ」 「ははは、これが終わったらプレゼントしたらどうですか？　そのスーツ。絶対喜びますよ」 　違う意味で、とは言えないが。 「まあ、あいつシュッとしてるから似合いそうではあるが……」 「あっはっは」 　かわいそうな麗人、アイリーンに同情しながら勇太郎は聞く。 「健太郎さんこそ一人ですか？　空条さんは……」 「……あいつが、来ると思うか？」 　健太郎のあきれ返ったようなその無表情に勇太郎は黙ってしまった。空条という少女はレインディアーズに所属しているのだが残念なことにパジャマ以外の恰好を見たことがない。 「はは……」 　勇太郎が苦笑すると健太郎に声がかかった。 「あ、ケンちゃん」 　声の先に居たのは修道服を着た少女だった。ソフィア・アターラロの募金先は非常に多いので修道女が居ても問題はない。 「エルドラド？　なんでお前が？」 　赤毛の修道女はぴこぴこ近づいてくる。 「なんか、ルディの関係らしいけど、恥ずかしがって出てこなくなっちゃった」 　そこでふと勇太郎は彼女がロバートに関連していた事を思い出した。 「はじめまして、お嬢さん」 　勇太郎は視線を少女に合わせてお辞儀する。 「あ、ヒリングデーモンの小沢さんでしょ？」 「はい。小沢勇太郎と言います」 「大変ね。お父さんのせいで」 　勇太郎の笑顔が一瞬だけひきつった。 「えぇ。父には困ったものです」 　彼の父、小沢太郎は今や悪徳政治家の典型で、しかもなぜか起訴されてない事でも有名だった。おそらく裁判所を買収しているらしいがTVでもそのことはタブーだった。 「私は……、ユートピア。よろしくね」 「ユートピア……。だからあだ名がエルドラド？」 　エルドラドと言えばガリア教に出てくる理想郷の代名詞である。 「えぇ、そうよ」 　ユートピアの横で健太郎が何かやりにくそうな顔をしていた。 　それを聞こうとした時に、入口側がわあっとなり、立ち上がりながらそちらに顔を向けると、見覚えのある青い着物を着た女がこちらに歩いて来ていた。 　女性はみんな、ほとんどドレスを着ているため彼女の恰好が珍しいのもあるし、彼女はなでしこのような女性だというのを勇太郎はよく知っている。 　切れ味のいい刃物みたいな女。レインディアーズの桐山 鉄乃だった。 「……」 　勇太郎はちょうど隣を通りかかったウエイターにワイングラスを渡し、彼女に近づいていく。 「どうも、お久しぶりです鉄乃さん」 　紳士的なお辞儀をすると鉄乃の顔が明らかに曇った。 「……勇太郎か」 「えぇ。今日もお美しいことで」 　笑顔で飄々という勇太郎に鉄乃は憮然とした表情になった。 「お前といると、落ち着かないんだが」 「ありゃ、冷たい。僕としてはいつも鉄乃さんと一緒に居たいんですけど」 「そう言うセリフをよく真顔で言えるな……。お前は」 　頬をひきつらせながら鉄乃が言う。 「どうせほかの――」 　鉄乃の言葉をかき消すように音楽が鳴り響いた。会場の奥のステージの垂れ幕の奥からオーケストラが現れてゆったりとした音楽を響かせている。 　それをきっかけに各々が踊りだした。 「……鉄乃さん」 　勇太郎は鉄乃の手をぱっととって踊りの輪に無理やり連れだした。 「おい、勇太郎っ！　私はダンスなんて踊ったこと……！」 「大丈夫大丈夫。案外勝手に体が動きます」 「お嬢さんお嬢さん」 　音楽の鳴る中、健太郎とユートピアが話をしていると、そんな声がかかった。 　ユートピアが振り向いた先にはゴスロリに鼻眼鏡という奇妙な格好の少女が居た。 「ムスタング……」 　健太郎が眼を丸くして呟くと、ユートピアは何かに引き寄せられるようにムスタングに近づいていった。 「踊りましょ？」 　ムスタングが、先ほどとはどこか雰囲気が違う声で言う。 「うん。僕、よくわかんないからポーリーがリードして」 　エルドラドが少し恥ずかしそうに言うとポーリーはふふふ、とおかしそうに笑う。 「わかったわ」 　二人は手を取り合って踊りの輪の中に入っていった。 　残された健太郎は厳しい顔で 　どこから持ってきたのだろう。黒い拳銃を白く細い手で握りしめて、彼女は聞いた。 「たぶん、今は銀色。ねえ、それって私も見れる？」 　聞いてみると、彼女は微笑んで否定した。 「ううん。あなたは見れないわ」 　ごつ、と額に銃口が当たる。 「人間の額の骨は一番硬いそうよ。それに角度も重要」 　私が忠告してあげると、彼女の顔が再び微笑み、ありがとう、と言って首に銃口を当てた。 「特異点が特異点を殺したって、きっとその因子は残るわ。だから世界が滅ぶことはないの」 「調べたの？」 「私、こう見えても長生きなのよ？」 「……そう」 「だから、安心して天国に行って。そして、それからその剣を貰うわ」 　私の持つ刀を、彼女は欲しがっていた。でも、最後に、教えてあげないと。 「最後に、一つだけ、良い？」 「なあに？」 「この刀は、健太郎さんじゃないの」 　がたがた、と彼女の体が震えた。かと思うと、彼女は拳銃の銃床で私の頭を殴り倒してお腹の上に乗ると何度も頭を殴った。 「すぐに殺してあげようかと思ったけど、気がかわっちゃった。じっくり殺してあげるわ」 　凄惨な笑みを浮かべて彼女は私を殴り続ける。 「……ねぇ」 「なあに？　息絶えるまで長いんだから、なんでも聞いてあげるわ」 「まだわからないの？」 「……なに、……が？」 「もうわかってるんじゃないの？」 　彼女の手が止まった。顔中から熱いものが流れ出ている感覚。 「私が、今、特異点じゃなくなってるってことに」 　彼女の――アイリーンの手が止まった。 　　　　　　　＊＊＊ 　アイリーンはあまりの、その突拍子無い告白に手を止めてしまった。 　　　　　　　＊＊＊ 　泉の横、ぬかるんだ地面。 　森の中であまりに無防備すぎる――それでも剣を片手に持っていた――彼女を見つけ、その剣を受け渡す交渉をしようと思った時に、彼女――春暁から告白があった。彼女は私に気づいていた。 「私は、健太郎さんだって言ったら笑う？」 「……面白いジョークね」 　勢いを失った私は脅すために持ってきた拳銃を持て余してしまった。 「健太郎さん……、ヘブンに墜落してきたときはね、まだ、生きてたのよ」 　突拍子無い告白だ。本当にそう思った。けれど、拳銃を持った手に力がこもった。 「私が見つけたとき、人の形を留めていたけど、たぶんきっと、もうすぐ死ぬだろうと思った。彼も、それがわかってたみたい。 　……彼は、私に聞いたの。『神徒にそんな風に見つめられるのは初めてだ。人間になりたいのかい？』って。 　私が頷くと、私の中にもぐりこんだ。その時、私の中でひとへの興味が一層強くなったの」 　その言葉の意味を呑み込んだ瞬間、私は彼女に襲いかかっていた。その細く白い首を片手は拳銃を持ったまま両手でぎゅっとつかみ、叫びながら揺さぶった。 「ただの薄汚い神徒だったあなたが、ケントと融合したですって？　嘘もいい加減にしなさい！　どうやって？　ねぇ！」 「健太郎さんのアームコアの中に、私の自我がもぐりこんで、そのアームコアは私の体の中にもぐりこんだの」 　春暁は静かに呟いた。 「人体の中でアームコアができることがあるように、アームコアは私の中で溶けてった」 「嘘よ！」 「そう思うのなら、手を離して」 　その言葉は、再び私に衝撃を与えた。たしかに、信じてないなら笑ってしまうような話だ。 　しかし、彼女の言葉を、私は信じていた。真実のものとして。 「私は、この刀を手放すことはないわ。だって、健太郎さんの生きた証だから」 　私は手を離し、彼女を突き飛ばして頭を何度もかきむしった。 「……血の色って、何色？」 　　　　　　　＊＊＊ 「今度は、なに？」 　疲れきった顔でアイリーンが言う。 「そろそろ、リヴドが目覚めると思うから。かれは、私より、因子が強いから」 　だらだらと流れる真っ赤な血が、不意に銀色になった。血が小さな流れを地面に作り、それが泉に溶ける。 「あなた……、神徒に、もどって……」 「うん」 　春暁が微笑みながら頷いた。それを合図とするかのようにぶおっと熱風が吹き、アイリーンがころころと地面に転がった。 　熱風に飛ばされたアイリーンをよそに、春暁に二人の女性が駆け寄る。 「春暁！」 　真っ赤な燃えるようなドレスに身をつつんだ女が春暁を庇うように立った。その右腕だけドレスの裾が燃え焦げて無くなり、生身の腕をむき出しにさせている。 「春暁さん、無事ですか？」 　もう一人の女が春暁の身体を抱き寄せながら聞いた。 「大丈夫。ありがとう、セリア」 　穏やかな声で春暁が答えるとドレスを着た女が噛みつくように叫ぶ。 「バカ言え！　血だらけじゃねぇか！」 　その右腕は依然としてアイリーンに向けられている。 「エゼキエルのルシファーに……、ローレライ。あなたまで居るなんてね」 「気安く呼ぶな！　骨も残らない焼死体にしてやろうか？　えぇ？」 　真っ赤なドレスのルシファーががなった。 「……ポーリーさんとの約束でしたから」 　対して、きわめて静かに、春暁の白い土がついた背中を優しく撫でながらセリア・ローレライが言う。冷たい敵意がその態度にはあらわれていた。 「本当はこんなくだらない戦いに参加したくはないんですけどね」 「……くだらない？　くだらないですって……？」 　アイリーンの身体から黒いツタが漏れ出し、あふれはじめた。 「オルタナに感染してる……」 　小さな声でセリアが言うとルシファーの足元からドレスの裾を燃やしながら炎があふれ出し、その炎がアイリーンの黒いつたと拮抗し始めた。 「くだらない……？　くだらない……？」 　アイリーンの瞳は焦点を失い、うわごとのようにそれを呟いている。 「……んだよ、これ！」 　徐々に黒いつたが炎をのみこんでいく。 「逃げよう」 　セリアがぽつりとつぶやいた。 　ルシファーも悔しそうに頷いた途端、ごうっと霧のような白い風が吹く。 「未来王だ……。ルシファー、今のうちに行くよ」 「わかってるよ！」 　三人を守るような白い霧を背後に、春暁を背負ったセリア達は走り始めた。 2012-01-04T23:14:10+09:00
